You need to have read at least 250 pages of independent reading by Thursday, November 10th.
If you have already read 250+ pages since the beginning of the school year, read for 20 minutes. Then print and fill in a cause and effect clouds sheet (in the files column). If you can't print, you can just draw it out by hand.
If you have not yet read 250 pages of independent reading, read for 30 minutes and do TWO independent reading updates in the discussion section of your class page. (Read for 15 minutes, then independent reading update #5a. Read for another 15 minutes and do independent reading update #5b.)
Keep in mind you have TWO days to do this since there is no school on Tuesday, November 8.

Tuesday, October 11
Read chapter 5 (pages 58-67) in The Pearl. In the left hand column of your dialectical journal, copy down 3 examples of symbolism from the chapter. In the right, explain what the image symbolizes and why it is a good symbol. Examples provided here ------->
If you still do not feel comfortable with symbolism, write down examples of VISUAL imagery in the right. In the left, explain why you think Steinbeck included each of those images.

Symbolism: Use of a concrete noun (person, place, or thing) to represent an idea, theme, or concept.
Visual Imagery: Vivid description of how something looks.

Vocab unit 2 begins today and you have to complete a word study.
Because of Rosh Hashana, I will not check that homework until Monday, 10/3. HOWEVER, we will be doing vocab skits on Friday 9/30. This week, people who can guess the vocab words correctly (as opposed to the actos) will get prizes. Make sure you have spent some time looking over the vocab words before then so you can win something. Also, wouldn't it be fun to not have any English homework over the weekend? Do your vocab early if you are not observing the holiday.
